HLTAID009 – Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

Unit Overview

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in line with the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) guidelines.

This unit applies to all persons who may be required to provide CPR, in a range of situations, including community and workplace settings.

Specific licensing/regulatory requirements relating to this competency, including requirements for refresher training should be obtained from the relevant national/state/territory Work Health and Safety Regulatory Authorities.

HLTAID011 – Provide First Aid

Unit Overview

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to provide a first aid response to a casualty in line with first aid guidelines determined by the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) and other Australian national peak clinical bodies.

The unit applies to all persons who may be required to provide a first aid response in a range of situations, including community and workplace settings.

Specific licensing/regulatory requirements relating to this competency, including requirements for refresher training should be obtained from the relevant national/state/territory Work Health and Safety Regulatory Authorities.

Entry requirements

Students will need to meet the following entry requirements prior to course commencement.

  • Learners are required to perform a minimum of 2 minutes of uninterrupted CPR on a manikin placed on the floor. This requirement is a mandatory as stated in the Training Package, no exceptions can be made on this requirement.
  • Learners that are not able to fulfil the physical requirements of the practical assessment, are not able to be deemed competent or issued with a Statement of Attainment. The learner will instead be issued with a Certificate of Attendance.
  • Have a Unique Student Identifier (USI) – Creating a Unique Student Identifier (USI) is free and will only take a few minutes. You only need to create a USI once and it will stay with you for life. To create a USI, go to: https://www.usi.gov.au/students/get-a-usi
  • Have a valid government issued photo identification card (passport, drivers license, photo card, proof of age card). Expired ID will not be accepted and certificates are not able to issued unless identity is verified.

In order to complete this online course, students will need access to the following:
  • Have access to a PC/ Laptop with speakers, microphone and webcam
  • Have access to high speed Wi-Fi or cable capabilities necessary to research, upload and download documents
  • PDF Reader
  • Suitable internet browser such as; Google Chrome, Safari or Internet Explorer
  • Hold sound computer skills
  • Have latest operating system e.g. Windows 10, Mac OSX High Sierra, iPad ISO10 or higher
  • Have access to a unique email address. This email address cannot be used by another student as it becomes your unique login.

  • Reading and Writing – Learners will be able to read, understand, and complete first aid documentation and instructions in various emergency situations.

  • Oral Communication – Learners will be able to clearly communicate during emergencies, including giving and receiving information when providing first aid.

  • Numeracy and Mathematics – Learners will be able to use basic numeracy skills to calculate timing for CPR compressions, medication doses (if applicable), and monitor vital signs.

  • Learning Skills – Learners will be able to research and stay up to date with current first aid guidelines, procedures, and legal responsibilities.

  • Teamwork Skills – Learners will be able to work effectively with others in emergency situations, supporting team-based responses and communication.

  • Self-Management Skills – Learners will be able to stay calm, make quick decisions, and follow established protocols when managing first aid incidents.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

    1. Respond to Emergency Situations
      Identify signs of medical emergencies, assess the scene for danger, and apply DRSABCD protocols to ensure the safety of self, bystanders, and the casualty.

    2. Perform CPR on Adults, Children, and Infants
      Demonstrate effective CPR techniques using manikins, including correct hand placement, compression depth and rate, and rescue breaths.

    3. Use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
      Safely operate an AED in accordance with manufacturer guidelines and integrate it into CPR procedures.

    4. Provide First Aid for a Range of Injuries and Conditions
      Apply appropriate first aid techniques for bleeding, burns, fractures, asthma, anaphylaxis, choking, seizures, shock, and other common medical conditions.

    5. Communicate Details of the Incident
      Accurately report and document incidents in line with legal and workplace requirements, including written reports and verbal communication with emergency services.

    6. Apply Infection Control Procedures
      Follow standard precautions for infection control, including hand hygiene and use of personal protective equipment (PPE).

    7. Understand Legal, Ethical, and Workplace Considerations
      Recognise the legal responsibilities of a first aider, including duty of care, consent, and confidentiality in the Australian context.

    8. Maintain and Review First Aid Skills
      Understand the importance of regular refresher training and maintaining current skills according to workplace needs and regulatory guidelines.

    Once a competent mark is awarded, learners will be issued with a Statement of Attainment for:

    This unit is derived from the Health Package HLT for packaging. No specific qualification has been determined

    Certificates are emailed to students.

    This is a blended course.
    1. Online component. Upon enrolling you will gain access to the elearning materials and online knowledge assessment tasks to be completed via our online Learner portal. You can enrol and start your online course at any time and there is no limit on the number of times you can login and out. You can pause a session and come back to it later as all previously answered questions will be stored in your online learning portal.
    2. Live Practical workshop. The Practical assessments will be conducted during a scheduled, Instructor led, Face to Face practical session that will run for a minimum of 4hrs. This practical session will involve you completing the following practical tasks whilst being observed by your assessor:
      • Perform CPR on an adult + an infant resuscitation
      • Use an AED on the manikin whilst placing the casualty in a recover position.
      • Handing over to emergency services, by providing an accurate verbal report of the incident.

    You can study at your own pace and have up to 4 weeks to complete the entire course after which your enrolment will expire.

    If your initial 4-week enrolment period is due to expire, you may purchase an extension for a further 4 weeks.
