White Card - Virtual Class (NSW) overview

This unit of competency specifies the mandatory work health and safety training required prior to undertaking construction work. The unit requires the person to demonstrate personal awareness and knowledge of health and safety legislative requirements in order to work safely and prevent injury or harm to self and others.

It covers identifying and orally reporting common construction hazards, understanding basic risk control measures, and identifying procedures for responding to potential incidents and emergencies. It also covers correctly selecting and fitting common personal protective equipment (PPE) used for construction work.

 

 

Entry requirements

Students will need to meet the following entry requirements prior to course commencement.

  • Ensure they are able to attend the workshop from start to finish.
  • Have a Unique Student Identifier (USI) – Creating a Unique Student Identifier (USI) is free and will only take a few minutes. You only need to create a USI once and it will stay with you for life. To create a USI, go to: https://www.usi.gov.au/students/get-a-usi
  • Have a valid government issued photo identification card (passport, drivers license, photo card, proof of age card). Expired ID will not be accepted and certificates are not able to issued unless identity is verified.
  • The Practical will require learners to purchase the follow Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) items prior to attending the workshop. You need to demonstrate the correct fitting of the  Personal Protective Equipment (PPE):
    • eye protection (safety goggles or glasses)
    • hearing protection (ear plugs or earmuffs)
    • hard hat
    • high visibility vest, shirt or jacket.
System Requirements
In order to complete this online course, students will need access to the following:
  • Have access to a PC/ Laptop with speakers, microphone and webcam
  • Have access to high speed Wi-Fi or cable capabilities necessary to research, upload and download documents
  • PDF Reader
  • Suitable internet browser such as; Google Chrome, Safari or Internet Explorer
  • Hold sound computer skills
  • Have latest operating system e.g. Windows 10, Mac OSX High Sierra, iPad ISO10 or higher
  • Have access to a unique email address. This email address cannot be used by another student as it becomes your unique login.
Existing Skills & Knowledge
Students are required to have the following skills and knowledge prior to enrolment:
  • Reading & Writing
    Learners will read, interpret, and complete construction-related documents, including Safe Work Method Statements (SWMS), safety signage, incident reports, and workplace procedures.
  • Oral Communication
    Learners will communicate clearly on-site, including reporting hazards, following instructions, and participating in safety discussions and toolbox talks.
  • Numeracy & Mathematics
    Learners will apply basic numeracy skills to interpret measurements, safety signs, risk levels, and simple workplace calculations relevant to construction tasks.
  • Learning Skills
    Learners will understand and apply current WHS legislation, site rules, and safe work practices, and stay informed about safety requirements in the construction industry.
  • Teamwork
    Learners will work effectively with others on-site, following directions, supporting team safety, and contributing to a safe and productive work environment.
  • Self-Management
    Learners will take responsibility for their own safety, follow site procedures, use PPE correctly, and manage their behaviour to maintain a safe workplace.

 

 

 

Learners must be (aged 14+) to attend.

A white card (or general construction induction card) is required for workers who want to carry out construction work.

People who need a white card include:

  • site managers, supervisors, surveyors, labourers and tradespeople
  • people who access operational construction zones (unaccompanied or not directly supervised by an inducted person)
  • workers whose employment causes them to routinely enter operational construction zones.

The white card becomes void if you haven’t carried out construction work for two consecutive years or more.

By completing this assessment, you will be demonstrating your ability to:

  • Identify health and safety legislative requirements of construction work.
  • Identify construction hazards and risk control measures.
  • Identify health and safety communication and reporting processes.
  • Identify incident and emergency response procedures.

 

 

    Assessment Tasks and Schedule
    The following assessments tasks are required for successful complete of this unit of competency;

    • Series of multiple choice and short answer questions

    • Questions requiring oral responses
    AT3 & AT4 Practical assessments:

    MUST BE CONDUCTED IN THE PRESENCE OF THE ASSESSOR

    AT3      Complete a form

    Written scenario requiring the learner to compete a form

    AT4      Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

    Physical demonstration of the learner correctly fitting 4 pieces of personal protective equipment (PPE).

    These assessment tasks/activities have been described in detail within the assessment tasks.

     

     Assessment Conditions

    The UOC states the following assessment conditions must be met:

    • assessment must contain a range of methods including practical demonstration, oral and written reporting.
    • assessment of performance evidence must be conducted by direct observation of the candidate, either by an assessor observing the candidate physically and/or by an assessor observing the candidate via audio and visual media in real time.

    In addition to the above, the following must be present and available to candidates during assessment activities:

    • Equipment
      • eye protection
      • hearing protection
      • hard hat
      • high visibility vest, shirt or jacket.

     

    What happens after you complete the course

    1. Assessment finalised
      Once you successfully complete all training and assessment requirements, your competency is confirmed by the trainer/assessor.
    2. Statement of Attainment issued
      You receive your CPCWHS1001 Statement of Attainment. This allows you to start work immediately.
    3. Details submitted to SafeWork NSW
      We will lodge your results with SafeWork NSW for card processing.
    4. White Card issued
      SafeWork NSW processes your application and produces your official White Card.
    5. Card delivered
      Your physical White Card is posted to your nominated address (typically within 5–10 business days).

    Important notes

    • You must provide valid ID (100 points) during enrolment
    • Your name must match your ID exactly
    • Keep your Statement of Attainment until your card arrives
    NSW White Card validity

    The NSW White Card does not expire—it is valid for life.

    However:

    • If you have not worked in construction for 2 consecutive years or more, you may be required to retake the course before returning to site.
    • Your card must remain legible and in good condition—damaged or unreadable cards should be replaced.

     

     

    This is a 6-hour course.

    The course is delivered via Zoom, including all required knowledge tests and practical assessments.
