Unit Overview
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in line with the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) guidelines.
This unit applies to all persons who may be required to provide CPR, in a range of situations, including community and workplace settings.

HLTAID011 – Provide First Aid
Unit Overview
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to provide a first aid response to a casualty in line with first aid guidelines determined by the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) and other Australian national peak clinical bodies.
The unit applies to all persons who may be required to provide a first aid response in a range of situations, including community and workplace settings.
Specific licensing/regulatory requirements relating to this competency, including requirements for refresher training should be obtained from the relevant national/state/territory Work Health and Safety Regulatory Authorities.
Entry requirements
Students will need to meet the following entry requirements prior to course commencement.
Reading and Writing – Learners will be able to read, understand, and complete first aid documentation and instructions in various emergency situations.
Oral Communication – Learners will be able to clearly communicate during emergencies, including giving and receiving information when providing first aid.
Numeracy and Mathematics – Learners will be able to use basic numeracy skills to calculate timing for CPR compressions, medication doses (if applicable), and monitor vital signs.
Learning Skills – Learners will be able to research and stay up to date with current first aid guidelines, procedures, and legal responsibilities.
Teamwork Skills – Learners will be able to work effectively with others in emergency situations, supporting team-based responses and communication.
Self-Management Skills – Learners will be able to stay calm, make quick decisions, and follow established protocols when managing first aid incidents.

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
Respond to Emergency Situations
Identify signs of medical emergencies, assess the scene for danger, and apply DRSABCD protocols to ensure the safety of self, bystanders, and the casualty.
Perform CPR on Adults, Children, and Infants
Demonstrate effective CPR techniques using manikins, including correct hand placement, compression depth and rate, and rescue breaths.
Use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
Safely operate an AED in accordance with manufacturer guidelines and integrate it into CPR procedures.
Provide First Aid for a Range of Injuries and Conditions
Apply appropriate first aid techniques for bleeding, burns, fractures, asthma, anaphylaxis, choking, seizures, shock, and other common medical conditions.
Communicate Details of the Incident
Accurately report and document incidents in line with legal and workplace requirements, including written reports and verbal communication with emergency services.
Apply Infection Control Procedures
Follow standard precautions for infection control, including hand hygiene and use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
Understand Legal, Ethical, and Workplace Considerations
Recognise the legal responsibilities of a first aider, including duty of care, consent, and confidentiality in the Australian context.
Maintain and Review First Aid Skills
Understand the importance of regular refresher training and maintaining current skills according to workplace needs and regulatory guidelines.
