Use hygienic practices for food safety

This course is for food handling personnel working in tourism, hospitality and catering organisations with permanent or temporary kitchen premises, and smaller food preparation or bar areas.

Course Duration

This is an online course, with all learning activities and assessment tasks completed online. You can enrol and start your Food handler online course at any time and there is no limit on the number of times you can login and out. You can pause a session and come back to it later as all previously answered questions will be stored in your online learning portal. You can study at your own pace and have up to 4 weeks to complete the course after which your enrolment will expire. How quickly you complete the course depends on the time it takes you to complete each module including the Quizzes and Final Assessment Tasks.

Pre-Requisites

There are no pre-requisities to this course. Whilst there are no training prerequisites, there are some requirements around language, literacy and numeracy. RPL / Credit Transfer may apply to acknowledge the students existing skills and competence.

Note: Recognition of prior learning may not be applied to students who are obtaining a FSS certificate for the first time.

Existing Skills & Knowledge

This course is for food handling personnel working in tourism, hospitality and catering organisations with permanent or temporary kitchen premises, and smaller food preparation or bar areas.

We have identified that our typical Learner Cohort will have the following existing skills and knowledge prior to entry into this Training Product:

  • Individuals / employees wishing to change careers or enter into a new career
  • Individuals / employees or organisations that need to meet licensing or other regulatory requirements
  • Reading and writing – a learner will be able to read, comprehend and write a range of texts within a variety of contexts.
  • Oral communication – a learner will be able to use and respond to spoken language including some unfamiliar material within a variety of contexts.
  • Numeracy and mathematics – a learner will be able to recognise and use a variety of conventions and symbolism of formal mathematics.

Entry Requirements

Students will need to meet the following entry requirements prior to course commencement.

  • Be at least 18 years old

  • Have a Unique Student Identifier (USI) – Creating a Unique Student Identifier (USI) is free and will only take a few minutes. You only need to create a USI once and it will stay with you for life. To create a USI, go to Get a USI | Unique Student Identifier

  • Have a valid government issued photo identification card

  • Have access to a PC/ Laptop with speakers, microphone and webcam

  • Have access to high speed Wi-Fi or cable capabilities necessary to research, upload and download documents

  • PDF Reader

  • Hold sound computer skills

  • Have latest operating system e.g. Windows 10, Mac OSX High Sierra, iPad ISO10 or higher

  • Have access to a unique email address. This email address cannot be used by another student as it becomes your unique login.

  • Suitable internet browser such as; Google Chrome, Safari or Internet Explorer

Learning Outcomes

  • Follow hygiene procedures and identify food hazards

  • Report any personal health issues

  • Prevent food contamination

  • Prevent cross-contamination by washing hands

Assessment

As this is an online course, all assessment tasks will be completed on-line. The assessment schedule tasks consist of:

  • Multiple choice quiz at the end of each module.
  • Short answer assessment for a series of case studies.
  • Written portfolio of evidence requiring you to document workplace tasks being completed.
  • Practical Assessment Tasks – You will be required to upload a short video recording of you preparing food according to food safety processes.

Certification

Once a competent mark is awarded, learners will be issued with a Statement of Attainment for:

This Unit of Competency is Nationally Recognised Training from Tourism, Travel and Hospitality Training Package. Certificates are emailed to students.
